Arrowroot Powder, Organic

from $3.23

Arrowroot powder is most often used as a thickener, much like cornstarch. But it’s not just a substitute—for many recipes, arrowroot powder is better than cornstarch! It forms a clear gel when mixed with water (unlike cornstarch, which makes an opaque slurry and can dull or obscure colors), so it’s ideal for dishes where a specific color is desired. It also doesn’t break down when frozen or exposed to acidity, so it’s good for thickening homemade ice cream or recipes with fruit. It’s best to add arrowroot powder toward the end of cooking, though, because it does degrade when exposed to high heat for a long time.

Our organic arrowroot powder is also perfect as a dusting powder for things like pan fried meats or potato/sweet potato fries to give them an added crispy coating, and is a great addition to moisturizers, as it helps them penetrate the skin. It’s a helpful ingredient in the diet of babies because it’s easy to digest.

Directions

For thickening, arrowroot is best used at the end of cooking (just before boiling), as continued heating will destroy its thickening ability. For gravies and sauces, first mix arrowroot powder with a small amount of cool liquid, then whisk into hot liquids.
